Life’s Journey

Surrounded by her family, Marcell Everdean Smith Henderson, 86, of Little Rock, went home to be with
Our Lord on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. Dean, as she was commonly called, was the youngest of ten
children born to the late O. T. and Mamie Smith of North Little Rock.
Marcell was a Licensed Practical Nurse, and later attended Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science in
Dallas, Texas. She returned to Arkansas to finish her education and received her Master’s Degree in
Education from Ouachita Baptist University. Her shift to education led to a career in Special Education.
She was a longtime teacher in the Forrest City, Lonoke, and Little Rock School Districts. Her passion was
always working with special needs children, and she was greatly loved by all of her students. She was a
nurturer who had a love for people and enjoyed cooking for the elderly. She was a single mother who
raised three children who strive to honor her legacy. She grew up in Lee Chapel A.M.E. Church in North
Little Rock and later joined Conner Chapel A.M.E. Church in Little Rock.
She is preceded in death by her siblings: James, Herman, O.T. Jr., Eloyce, Oswald, Lawrence, Pha, and
Eugenia; as well as her son-in-law, James P. Massie, Sr.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Jauan Massie, Reginald Henderson, Kim Evans and her
