John Talley Jr.’s birth was August 19, 1928, in Little Rock, Arkansas. The son of Mary Dildy Stewart and John Talley, was born 63 years after slavery. According to the U.S. Census, only about 0.05 or 1/2% of Black Men make it to 90 years old.
James A. Baldwin said, “ To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time”
John Talley Jr. curbed his rage and became an alum of Dunbar High School, enlisted in the United States Air Force, and received an honorable discharge as a Sergeant. He married Odessa Bolden and their union was blessed with six children: Deidre, Kenneth, John Kevin, Vaughn Everett, Carolyn, and Philip. The family wishes to acknowledge that he was also blessed to have fathered two other sons, Keith Jones and the late Darrell Jones. All of the Talley siblings have lovingly welcomed Keith into the family fold upon learning of his existence and deeply regret they were not able to share the same love with Darrell.
Afterward, John Talley Jr. graduated from Philander Smith College. He taught typing and math in the Chicot County Training School in Dermott, Arkansas. Later, he found employment with the United States Postal Service where his civil service included having been a Personnel Director/Postmaster in Hope, Arkansas, and later retired as a Station Manager in Rose City (North Little Rock).
Brother Talley joined Bullock Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church after 1973 when his youngest son Philip insisted that he would not attend without him. He loved teaching the Young Adult Sunday School Class. He served as a Steward where he managed the church funds with integrity and frugality, as if they were his own. He served as Steward Emeritus and was a Lifetime Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
His philosophy on whether or not one should say something to someone on an issue is summed up in his favorite quote: “Is it true, is it necessary, and can you say it with love?” This philosophy he has lovingly instilled in each of his children and they in each of theirs.
Left with memories of John Talley Jr. are sons, Kenneth (Pamela), John K. (Linda), Keith Jones(Lisa), Vaughn Everett, and Philip (Lyanette) Talley;
daughters, Deidre Maxwell and Carolyn Talley Harshaw(Dwight); and a host of
grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other relatives, and two special friends, Thomas Broughton and Wendell Smith.
