Walter Windell Banks was born May 15, 1940, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the fourth son born to Wade B. Banks and Rose Mae Banks. Walter, the son of a minister, lived in several communities while growing up: Jonesboro, Forest City, and Helena, Arkansas. They finally settled in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Walter attended Scipio A. Jones High School in North Little Rock, where he was an outstanding student in the Industrial Arts area. He was the treasurer of his senior class, a young man who looked to a future of high finance.
Immediately after completing high school, he enlisted in the United States Marines, where he served in Okinawa. After completing his military tour of duty, he settled in Oakland, California, where he then began employment with the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired after 32 years. He then decided to showcase his architectural skills by renovating a dilapidated house. He then lived in it
for several years. He later designed and was the overseer of the building of two palatial houses displaying impeccable taste inside and out.
“Handsome young man” was how the family referred to him, always a gracious host to family and friends who came to visit his home. He loved design, the stock market, cooking, reading, landscaping, mentoring to family members, his computer, and most of all, his family!
After his father's death in 1998, Walter returned to Arkansas to care for his mother. He was an outstanding caregiver until the end, and the entire family is indebted to him for a job well done. While caring for his mother, he once again designed a home to live in in Hot Springs Village. He became ill a few years later and decided he needed to be closer to home. After designing a new home in Maumelle, Walter was finally home.
Walter was a member of Lee Chapel A.M.E Church where he served as a steward. He took his last breath on July 11, 2025 at 4:39pm at home.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents, Presiding Elder Emeritus Wade B. Banks Sr, Rosie Mae Banks; Siblings Issac (Ruth) Banks, Wade (Blanche) B. Banks Jr, Otis (Jackie) Banks.
He leaves to cherish his memory one son Marcus Windell Simmons of Oakland, California, one brother Hollis (Janice) Banks of Englewood, CA and several nieces and nephews, and many other
family members. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Gone but not forgotten.
